NDLEA impounds 39,000kg of cocaine in Kano
Ted Odogwu, Kano
Kano State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mr. Hamza Umar, on Tuesday in Kano, said the command had seized not less than 39, 224.109kg of assorted drugs in the last one year.
Addressing newsmen during the 2017 United Nations drug-free day, with the theme, ‘Listen first,’ Umar said the impounded drugs included Cannabis Sativa which weighed 6,452kg followed by other psychotropic substances weighing 32,715.2kg.
He also disclosed that his men impounded 358.3 grammes of cocaine, 8.5 grammes of heroine, 31.8kg of methamphitamine and 24.8kg of ephedrine.
He said over 768 suspects were arrested out of which 505 suspects were counseled, 68 rehabilitated, while 240 convictions were recorded.
He said, “The major factors leading to drug abuse are within the community; the drugs are found there, the abusers and dealers are stationed there, while the resources to fight this monster are also based there.
“Therefore, the full support and involvement of the various groups in the community is indeed necessary.”
He explained that statistics from January to June 2017 indicated a marked decrease in supply and consumption of ‘Class A’ drugs, otherwise known as hard drugs.
“Ironically, we noticed an increase in the use of syrups and pentazocine injection; the command noticed there is serious increase in drug-related crimes in the state and we have taken all the necessary and needed steps to curtail it,” the commander stated.
He added that a 16-man committee had been set up to coordinate all plans and strategies aimed at curtailing the menace of drug abuse in the state.
Also speaking at the event, the NDLEA Commander in-charge of Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Mr. Ambrose Umoru, said drug abuse in Kano should not come as a surprise on account of its mega-city status.
“From June last year to date, MAKIA Command has seized 10.6kg of heroin, 700 grammes of cocaine, prosecuted five people who are serving different jail terms,” he said.
