Man, stripped for alleged theft, seeks justice
Etim Ekpimah, Uyo
A 40 year-old man and father of four, Mr. Itoro Akpante, is seeking justice against what he termed false accusation for theft, humiliation and disgrace.
Akpante, an indigene of Edem Akai Village, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State was stripped, beaten and paraded naked for stealing cassava.
Akpante, who is also the secretary to the village council and a ward secretary of the People’s Democratic Party, said he was wrongly accused and humiliated for a crime he did not commit.
“I was accused of stealing from a farm; something I did not do. I later received a letter of summons from my clan head, and when I honoured the invitation, I was told to pay N15,000.
“Some days later, 20 boys picked me from my house on the order of the clan head and took me to his palace. There, in the place, I was asked to swear to an oath that I would not kill the persons asking me to swear to the oath. I refused.
“The boys, who picked me up from my house, were the ones that stripped me naked, beat me up and manhandled me. When I filed a complaint at the Police Headquarters in Ikot Akpanabia, I was given a letter of summons inviting my accusers to the police station. I gave the letter to the clan head but he refused to collect the letter from me,” he said.
Human rights activist and Executive Director, Community Policing Partners for Justice, Security and Democratic Reforms in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Saviour Akpan, said in Uyo on Tuesday that the treatment meted out to Akpante was unfair.
