14,000 displaced in C’River communal clash, says official

OVER 14,000 residents of Wanikade and Wanihem communities in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River have been displaced after 1,233 houses were destroyed in a communal clash between both communities.

Distributing food and non-food items on Monday to the victims in collaboration with Cross River Food Bank Commission, Mr. John Inaku, Director-General of CR-SEMA, said the communal war between both communities had claimed many lives.

Inaku said the communal clash between June 27 and 29 was caused by land dispute between both communities.

He stated that over 1,233 houses were destroyed and over 14,000 people had been displaced as a result of the clash, adding that the destruction affected socio-economic life of the people, including farming.

The victims, who are currently camping at Efiola-Emokpe community in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State, were given bags of rice, beans, beverages, cooking utensils, groundnut and palm oil, among others.

Inaku said, “The Wanikade and Wanihem communities got themselves involved in a communal clash over land and as a result of that, all these persons here are migrants from one of the affected communities.

“Cross River Governor, Ben Ayade, has sent us here with these relief materials to distribute to the victims and to preach the songs of peace to them.”
