Gibson Achonu, Owerri

The Imo State Commander of Narcotics, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mrs. Assiana G. Nimbang has said that  the command seized 263.654 kilogrammes of hard drugs between July, 2016 and June, 2017 fiscal year in the state.

The seized hard drugs within the one year, she said, included heroine, cocaine, cannabis sativa and other psychotropic substances.

She said, “The above figure was recovered from 66 suspected drug dealers out of which 62 were males and two females. It is quite worrisome to point  out that the menace of hard drugs  has eaten deep into most villages and communities  in the state, which  used to be havens for morality devoid of criminality and hard drugs consumption  are now  neck deep in the availability of all kinds  of drugs  including cocaine, heroin  cannabis sativa popularly  called “guff” or “weed” and other psychotropic  substances”.

The commander listed Owerri North, Owerri West, Ahiazu Mbaise, Mbaitoli, Ikeduru and Okigwe as the local government areas in the state with highest number of arrested drug dealers.

Nimbang, who spoke on Tuesday in Owerri, capital of the state at the grand finale of the United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking tagged, ‘Listen first: Listening to children and youths is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe’, said the command had also prosecuted 13 drug dealers, all males, at the Federal High Court, Owerri.
