Netflix CEO Reed Hastings Was Reportedly Disgusted by Peter Thiel's Enthusiastic Support of Trump

A newly released email reveals the internal division on Facebook's board.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings warned Facebook board member Peter Thiel in 2015 that his vocal support for then-candidate Donald Trump was endangering his standing on Facebook's board of directors. Hastings participates on a committee that evaluates board members.

An August email from Hastings to Thiel was obtained by the New York TimesNeither individual denies its authenticity. The email reads in part:

“I see our board being about great judgment, particularly in unlikely disaster where we have to pick new leaders. I’m so mystified by your endorsement of Trump for our President, that for me it moves from ‘different judgment’ to ‘bad judgment.’ Some diversity in views is healthy, but catastrophically bad judgment (in my view) is not what anyone wants in a fellow board member.”

While Thiel remains on Facebook's board, Oculus VR Founder Palmer Luckey was ejected after secretly funding a pro-Trump PAC. Luckey was also accused of providing financial support to Internet trolls peddling racist and sexist memes.

Hastings supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, and said Trump “would destroy much of what is great about America.”

Thiel, who spoke at the Republican National Convention in 2016, appears to be having second thoughts after donating $1.25 million to Trump's campaign.
