Lawrence O'Donnell Explains How Democratic Response to Al Franken Is a Painful Step Forward

The party no longer offers cover for men who disrespect women.

MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell explained how the Democratic Party's treatment of Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) is necessary, even though it feels unfair.

As of this writing, 35 Democratic senators have called on Franken to immediately resign over allegations of sexual misconduct.

While Franken's accusers don't allege the sort of behavior of which Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore is accused, Democrats are setting a new baseline.

"Democrats are no longer in the business of minimizing such accusations," O'Donnell explained.

He told the story of how the Democrats defended President Bill Clinton in the 1990s, disregarding women's stories and protecting a man whose sexual misconduct is now a matter of public record.

"The Democrats are finally moving to an even higher moral ground in this area," O'Donnell said.
