Trump Reportedly Making Baseless Claim to Friends That Mueller Investigation Will Exonerate Him This Year

One adviser expressed fear the president will "blow a gasket" if the investigation continues into 2018.

A Washington Post report described President Donald Trump as expressing "certainty that the special-counsel probe into his campaign’s possible collusion with Russia will be finished by the end of the year, complete with an exoneration." This is according to multiple friends who the Post say have been in communication with Trump recently.

White House lawyer Ty Cobb is reportedly selling an "optimistic" take on the Mueller investigation to the president, saying investigators "will have completed all of their interviews within two weeks and that the special counsel’s office is no longer requesting new documents."

“This investigation’s going to be over with pretty soon,” Trump is said to have told friends at Mar-a-Lago and his South Florida golf clubs.

Trump's baseless optimism is concerning aides who fear the president will spiral if his baseless expectations prove to be incorrect.

One adviser told the Post that Trump may "blow a gasket" if he isn't exonerated by the start of 2018.
