The U.S. Army Reportedly Won't Allow Green Card Holders to Enlist 'Effective Immediately'

The move is a violation of federal law.

An email obtained by Mic sent to Army recruiters on Monday by Gregory C. Williamson, chief of the Accessions Suitability Office Guard Strength Division, explicity bars green card holders from enlisting in the military begining immediately upon receipt.

“EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY DO NOT ‘SHIP’ OR ‘ENLIST’ ANY FOREIGN NATIONAL’S (ALL I-551 CARD HOLDERS) UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE,” the email read.

This is blatantly illegal. Federal law states that any "alien who is lawfully admitted for permanent residence” can enlist in "any armed force."

Mic reports that an Army spokesperson did not deny that green card holders are now banned from enlisting, despite the fact that the Defense Department said just this year that President Donald Trump's administration had no plans to stop noncitizens from serving in the military.
