I've always been fascinated by health data. When tracking the right factors for a long enough period of time, we can unearth interesting patterns and understand which habits to shift or change in order to optimize our health.
Sleep is one such aspect of health that people love learning about. There are so many moving parts to it, everyone sleeps differently, and it has a significant effect on how we conduct our daily lives: our mood, attentiveness, cognitive abilities, energy levels, and more. Apps and wearables can help you track your sleep, but what about tech that goes directly on the bed you sleep on?
Eight Sleep calls itself a technology company that is changing the future of sleep. It does this through its purposefully designed mattresses and smart mattress cover, which track important sleep data in order to improve your sleep experience.
Its valuable use of sensors in its products is why we included Eight Sleep in our best mattress guide as the best mattress for techies.
After launching its first mattress in 2015, Eight Sleep has been able to collect all the data from thousands of customers around the world to create and improve upon its sleep products. While sleep is a process that even top scientists still have difficulty fully understanding, Eight Sleep gives you the best tools to learn what you can.

The Sleep Tracker is a mattress cover that turns any bed into a smart mattress.
The Sleep Tracker is a sensor layer that has many capabilities and communicates the data collected through the Eight Sleep app, which is available on iOS and Android devices. Once you lay it over your mattress and plug the cord into your wall, it's ready to use.
This smart mattress cover can do some cool things like...
- Track sleep data including your heart rate, number of hours slept, hours of restless sleep, and percentage of deep sleep
- Warm each side of the bed to precise desired temperatures
- Connect with WiFi-enabled and smart home devices
- Wake you up at the best time through its smart alarm
The Sleep Tracker now includes integration with the Amazon Echo and Dot, among other smart home devices.
Through the Echo and Dot, you can ask Alexa "How did I sleep last night?" instead of scrolling through the app, tell her to "warm up the left side of the bed," or simply just say "My bed is too cold."
Via IFTTT, other things you can do once you wake up include automatically starting your coffee maker, playing your morning playlist, and turning on your lights.
