Olubadan appeals for violence-free Egungun festival
Olufemi Atoyebi, Ibadan
The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has appealed to masqueraders in the city to conduct themselves in peaceful manner during this year’s Egungun festival which begins on Monday (today).
In a statement by the monarch’s Director, Media and Public Affairs, Adeola Oloko, the Olubadan warned against the repeat of what happened during a similar festival in 2016, where about 18 vehicles were destroyed around Akuro and Igbonna areas during a fracas between supporters of two masqueraders.
The monarch noted that the annual festival was a celebration of Ibadan custom and tradition, stressing that the event should not be an avenue to unleash terror on the people.
The Olubadan said, “As a monarch, my appeal to our people is to celebrate the festival within the ambit of the law. I will also like to persuade our people to avoid the use of weapons like guns, daggers, machetes and broken bottles not only during the festival but also after it, as the long arm of the law will not spare any merchant of violence.”
The Olubadan assured the people that law enforcement agents would monitor the festival to ensure a violence-free celebration.
The monarch also urged those involved in the festival to follow the routes already mapped out for them.
According to the release, the festival was originally slated to begin on June 4 but had to be rescheduled due to unfavourable security reports.
