He threatened to turn me into a moron, take over my property —Wife
“If I have ever failed in anything, it is in the choice of the husband I made. I’m married to an irresponsible man and a brute who has succeeded in making a mess of the 20 years I have spent with him in marriage. I have come before this court pleading for divorce so as to put my life back in shape.”
Iyabo told the court that her husband, Mukaila Akinpelu, who is also a farmer had failed as a breadwinner and is found wanting as husband and father.
The plaintiff in her suit stated that if her prayer was granted, the court should order her husband to let her pack her belongings from his home, while she also requested that the custody of their four children be granted her.
“If my husband is to be awarded a mark as the head of the home, he would score zero. He, likewise, can’t score more than zero when it comes to parenting. He is also a failure in this regard.
“He is a carefree person and nonchalant about issues that have to do with our welfare. He doesn’t take care of me and our children. He will never leave money to run the home, but expects to be served sumptuous meals at all times.
“After putting my wits together and coming up with something suitable for the family’s consumption, he says ‘Thank You’ by punching, kicking and hitting me at the slightest offence.
“The children’s education is not his priority. I do all I can to ensure our children’s school fees are paid. Since the children know he cares less about their education, they are also not committed to learning. As a result, they are dull and behind their mates in school.
“Our first child has dropped out of school and is now an apprentice. The second, a 12-year-old is in primary five; the third, a 10-year-old is in primary four and the last, a five-year-old is in the nursery class. He later withdrew our second and last children from school and took them to her mother at Modakeke where they are given little or no attention. They have also stopped going to school.
“I bought three farms and planted cocoa, kola nut, bitter kola on it, but he went to put juju there.
“He threatened to kill me and those I employed to work on the farms and take over them.
“He said he wanted to sell bitter kola for me and told me to go and borrow N100, 000 for its purchase which I did.
“He borrowed N10, 000 from the money and later, N80, 000. He later informed me he would sell the farm produce to another person.
“I told him to refund my N90,000, but he refused and vowed to turn me into a moron through diabolical means.
“I left his house a month ago when I perceived that my life was no longer safe with him, Iyabo further added.
Mukaila, when responding, told the court, “I’m satisfied with the step my wife has taken. She can go, but she can’t leave with my children.”
“I’m tired of her complaints and trouble. I have no peace at home and can’t think straight which is affecting my health and my activities on the farm.
“She has no regard for me and doesn’t fear me.
“She would go to the market and not return until it is evening. If I show my displeasure, she would flare up, abuse and fight me, “he said.
“I was once having a conversation with someone on the phone and as I walked into the room, she hit me hard with a cane twice. Before I could utter a word, she hit me again. I felt a sharp pain. The phone dropped from my hand and tears dropped from my eyes.
“She accused me of talking to a woman friend.
“When she was sober, she knelt down and begged me. She told me she didn’t know what came over her, Mukaila added.
“She stated that I’m not caring, but she failed to mention that I helped her in purchasing her land and employed workers who planted the crops there.
“We both agreed to take the children to Modakeke, I wonder why she’s now hammering on the matter here in the court.”
Having listened to the two parties, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade stated that more evidence would be needed.
He adjourned the case till July 20 and ordered the duo to come to court with their family members and children.
