HBO Responds to #NoConfederate Campaign During 'Game of Thrones'
During Sunday (July 30)’s episode on Game of Thrones, fans may have noticed that the hashtag #NoConfederate was trending throughout the entire night.
So why was it trending?
Outspoken activist April Reign created the hashtag as a response to GoT creators’ upcoming new show, Confederate.
The upcoming drama from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss “chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War and takes place in an alternate timeline where the Southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“We have great respect for the dialogue and concern being expressed around Confederate. We have faith that [writers] Nichelle, Dan, David and Malcolm will approach the subject with care and sensitivity. The project is currently in its infancy so we hope that people will reserve judgment until there is something to see,” HBO said in a statement released on Sunday night.
April also started the #OscarsSoWhite campaign back in 2016.
We know we have the power to make change. Let's show @hbo how many people are against #Confederate. Please join us Sunday w/ #NoConfederate.
