Police in a harvest of suspected criminals in Oyo

THE Oyo State Police Command has paraded a total of 16 suspected criminals comprising of armed robbers, thieves and a kidnapper, with the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Abiodun Odude, appreciating the members of the public for their support for the police through volunteering of information, which has brought about a reduction in crime rate in the state.

Speaking during the parade of the suspected criminals at the police headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, on Friday, Mr Odude revealed that the police were able to apprehend two members of a notorious armed robbery gang that had been terrorising motorists along Iwere-Ile/Igangan, Ago-Awaye, Iseyin road and other areas in Oke Ogun area of the state.

According to the police boss, the two arrested suspects, Janyu Bello (25) and Aliyu Lawal (20), belonged to a five-man armed robbery gang, “and on June 2, at about 4:00p.m., they laid siege to the Iwere-Ile/Igangan road, robbing travelers of their valuables.

“The armed hoodlums were later arrested by the Igboora police division, but further investigation carried out by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) following the confession of the suspects led to the recovery of the gang’s arms hidden in the bush at Elekokan village.

“The suspects also confessed to have carried out several robbery operations on the highways along Ago-Awaye, Igangan and Iseyin road.

“The police were also able to arrest a four-man gang responsible for the spate of armed robbery operations in Akobo area of Ibadan, and other parts of the state.

“The arrest of the hoodlums was sequel to their last attack on Wisdom Estate, Akobo, Ibadan, on June 3, at about 2:00a.m.

“During the operation, the armed robbers attacked members of the estate, while also robbing them of their valuable properties, including cash.

“However, during a raid carried out by the Idi-Aro police division, one of the suspects was arrested, and some of the stolen items like jewellery and mobile phones were recovered from him. His arrest and subsequent confession led to the arrest of three other members of the gang by SARS operatives,” the police boss said, while giving the names of the suspects as Liadi Afeez (22), Adeyemo Afeez (25), Semiu Fasasi a.k.a Olu Omo (21) and Yakubu Kamorudeen (23).

Also paraded was a kidnap suspect, Abubakar Mojumba (22), who alongside his accomplices now at large, kidnapped a 22-year-old lady, Saidat Musa.

“The victim was abducted from her residence in Elewuro village in Iganna, and taken into a thick forest in Iwere-Ile, where she was held hostage for three days, where she was s3xually-abused before she was rescued.

“While abducting the victim, the suspects also stole her (victim’s) husband’s  motorcycle, with which she was taken away.”

“One of the suspects was later arrested with the assistance of the villagers while trying to negotiate a ransom with the victim’s family members,” Mr Odude said, while promising that the police would continue to work towards making the state safe for habitation.
