Twitter rolls out bite-sized Twitter Lite app in 24 more countries

A number of big companies have sought to optimize their apps for developing markets in recent years, companies such as Google with its YouTube Go app and Facebook with Facebook Lite. Twitter has also been pursuing this with Twitter Lite, a slimline version of regular social media app that it’s had in the works since April.

In a blog post published yesterday, Twitter product manager Jesar Shah announced that the Twitter Lite app is rolling out in 24 more nations.

This succeeds a brief testing period in the Philippines, and it means the Twitter Lite app should now be available at the Google Play Store in: Algeria, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt, Israel, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Malaysia, Nigeria, Nepal, Panama, Peru, Serbia, El Salvador, South Africa, Thailand, Tunisia, Tanzania, and Venezuela.

Twitter Lite is optimized for emerging markets thanks to its compact size and the comparatively small amount of mobile data it consumes. In yesterday’s blog post, Twitter highlighted some of the key benefits of the app:

  • Loads quickly on 2G and 3G networks, and offers offline support in case you temporarily lose your connection
  • Minimizes data usage, and offers a data saver mode to download only the images or videos you want to see
  • Reduces install size to under 3 MB so it doesn’t take much room on your phone

If you reside in one of the aforementioned regions, the app should now be available for your at the Play Store — head over there via the button below if you want to check it out.
