Patent suggests a fully curved Galaxy smartphone might be coming
The next Galaxy phone might come with a screen that wraps around all the way to the back of the device.
Samsung first experimented with curved screens back in 2013 with the Galaxy Round and then the following year with the Galaxy Note Edge. It wasn’t until the Galaxy S6 Edge in 2015 that we saw what is now the standard design for all Galaxy flagships: iconic dual curves, each side sloping off slightly for a unique look and better ergonomics. Well, according to the latest series of patents found by LetsGoDigital, Samsung might be ready to take it to the next level.
As you can see from the first image, the company envisions a phone with a screen that wraps around the sides completely. In other words, instead of sloping off and stopping on each side, a future Galaxy phone might have a screen that extends 180-degrees to its back. It’s not clear how Samsung will address accidental touches or durability issues, but it adds that the design would offer a “completely new user experience” and an “improved grip.”
A lot of patents never see the light of day, so it’s entirely possible that we will never end up seeing this design in real life.
What’s interesting is that the second image showcases the manufacturing process for this 180-degree display, which indicates that this may be a tangible and relatively realistic project. With the growing trend towards bigger displays and bezel-less bodies, a fully curved screen could allow for an elegant solution to achieving a compact yet large-screened device. Having said that, I wouldn’t get my hopes up for the upcoming Galaxy S9 to have a screen like this. In fact, a lot of patents never see the light of day, so it’s entirely possible that we will never end up seeing this design in real life.
What design changes would you like to see in the Galaxy S9? Do you think Samsung will ever make a phone with a fully curved screen? Let us know by leaving a comment below!
