Highwind is a cute vertical shooter that just hit the Play Store

New games are released every day on the Google Play Store. When you go searching for something new, it can honestly be a little overwhelming. For every Monument Valley, there seem to be a hundred low effort games looking to capitalize the latest craze. That’s why finding a game like Highwind is so refreshing.

Highwind is the third game from Guatemalan game developer Selva Interactive. It’s a vertical shooter that only has two controls, wonderful graphics, and challenging levels. When you enter the game, you’re greeted with a few demo levels that introduce the simple controls. By tapping on the bottom right and left of the screen, you control your plane. In half of the levels, you’ll be using the controls to raise your shield or shoot your guns. In the other half, you’ll use the controls to move left and right and avoid incoming obstacles.

Possibly my favorite part about Highwind is the art style. Selva Interactive says the game is inspired by the origami art style and paper planes. It’s simple, it’s beautiful, and it’s fun to look at. All of the colors pop and right off the screen to give the game even more life. The audio is simple with just a few variations on the background music and some sound effects.

The game just hit the Play Store today so there aren’t many ratings as of yet. It’s only 99 cents and I think well worth it. One of the things I appreciate the most is that there are no micro-transactions in the game. You earn coins for each level you pass which allows you to buy upgrades to your shields and weapons for the duration of that game. You can also unlock new planes with different stats as well.
