Billionaire GOP Donor Sheldon Adelson Publicly Rejects Steve Bannon Plot to Unseat Incumbent Republicans
Billionaire casino magnate and GOP mega-donor Shelden Adelson has publicly rejected former White House aide Steve Bannon's plan to unseat incumbent Republicans in the upcoming midterms just weeks after meeting with Bannon.
Politico reports that Andy Abboud, a spokesperson for Adelson, said, “The Adelsons will not be supporting Steve Bannon’s efforts. They are supporting Mitch McConnell 100 percent. For anyone to infer anything otherwise is wrong.”
While Bannon would have been an unlikely recipient of Adelson's financial support, given his history of backing establishment candidates, the public diss may make other possible donors nervous to sign on with Bannon's plan for 2018.
Bannon is in the midst of trying to secure funding for his efforts. But his takeover strategy already hit a major roadblock amid a growing scandal around GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore, the Bannon-backed candidate who defeated establishment candidate Luther Strange in the Alabama primary.
Republican leaders are imploring Moore to leave the race as he faces numerous allegations of sexual assault on minors.
