If you haven't checked Facebook lately, you're in the minority

When Americans reach for their phones, there's a good chance they're about to check Facebook.

The social network has become the go-to place for connecting with friends, finding long lost relatives, and reading news. And Americans are more likely to turn to it multiple times a day than any other social networking service. More than half of U.S. mobile users check Facebook's app several times a day, according to a new report by AudienceProject that's charted here by Statista

Other social networking apps and sites are also catching on with consumers. But Facebook has an edge there too. WhatsApp and Instagram, which placed second and fifth in terms of the portion of U.S. mobile users that check them multiple times a day, are also owned by the social networking behemoth.

Interestingly, Instagram was just barely nudged by archrival Snapchat in this comparison. The two companies have spent the past year battling it out for user attention, and Instagram has made a habit of duplicating many of Snapchat's most popular features.  Chart of the Day 10/2Mike Nudelman/Business Insider
