A new variant of a home health-care device from OnKöl allows doctors and patients to remotely monitor medical conditions and report that data using specialized IoT modules from Gemalto, according to IoT Business News.

Elderly patients will be able to connect monitoring equipment like blood pressure cuffs and heart-rate monitors to the device, which can communicate it back to their doctor and log it in the patient’s electronic record.

Combining specialized IoT networks with home health monitoring devices could help accelerate the growth of this device category. These types of devices don’t transmit very much data, but what they do send is extremely sensitive and needs to be secured. Using specialized IoT communication networks and modules can allow device designers to implement measures to ensure data is transmitted securely. Health-data security is a major issue that holds back use of remote monitoring and other technologies in medicine — 113 million Americans were impacted by health data breaches in 2015 — but the potential cost savings and improvement in quality of care are why companies like OnKöl are pursuing solutions that can transmit data and keep it secure.

Health care is a multi-trillion-dollar behemoth of the global economy — but it has a complicated relationship with technology, embracing some innovative tools while resisting others.
