Super Mario Run getting new character, world, mode and price cut

Nintendo’s first smartphone game to feature its most celebrated character didn’t exactly achieve what the company had hoped for. Despite amassing a reported 150 million downloads, it seems that consumers were hesitant to shell out the $9.99 required to unlock the full version of Super Mario Run.

Nintendo might soon be able to convert a few more players to purchasing its Android title, however, with the announcement of a new update coming this Friday. Nintendo announced in a Tweet that it would introduce a new world, a new mode, a new playable character (Daisy), and more to the Mario Run on September 29.

According to Polygon, the new world, called World Star, will open up after completing the first six and will be comprised of nine new levels. There, you will also find new “enemies and gameplay mechanics.” The new mode, meanwhile, is called Remix 10 and will see players run through 10, jumbled up sections of existing levels that change after each attempt.

And if you’re wondering what the headphones are about in the main image, Nintendo is including the option to listen to your own music while playing the game too. When doing so, Mario and the other characters will appear wearing headphones.

Rounding off the good news, Nintendo also revealed that it would knock 50% off the asking price for accessing the full game, down from $9.99 to $4.99, between September 29 and October 12.

This is probably the biggest thing to happen to Super Mario Run since its Android release earlier this year, though a temporary price drop and a handful of new features might not be enough revive enthusiasm for it in the long term. Still, it should be good for a shot in the arm
