Nokia 3 will receive Android 7.1.1 Nougat update by end of August (Update: rolling out now)
Update (9/11): The Nokia 3 is now being updated to Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Since the device was already running Android 7.0, this update to 7.1.1 won’t be the most drastic change in the world. However, Android 7.1.1 does bring along with it some new features, security upgrades, and tweaks to the entry-level phone from HMD.
More important than the update itself is the message that HMD, the company that licenses the Nokia brand, is sending. HMD is a bit of an unknown with software updates since it was just founded nine months ago. Pushing out an update to an entry-level phone that hasn’t even been released in the states yet is a good sign that the company will be committed to updates for future phones.

The update is a little late, however. HMD’s chief product officer promised it by the end of August, and it’s not the most recent version of Android, but it does have us hopeful for the future of Nokia devices. Nokia previously confirmed that its 3, 5, and 6 smartphones would also receive Android Oreo so it looks like the once proud brand looks to be in good hands with HMD.
Original post (7/31): The Nokia 3 is one of three low-cost handsets that HMD Global has released this year. However, as the least costly of the Nokia-branded Android smartphones available right now, it does come with some limitations: unlike the Nokia 6 and 5, the Nokia 3 makes use of Android 7.0 instead of Android 7.1.1.
Therefore, users have been repeatedly asking when the Nokia 3 will get a software update. HMD has been pretty quick to release updates for its phones so far. In fact, Nokia devices were the first to receive the July security patches, even before Google’s handsets. That’s why it’s somewhat surprising that the Nokia 3 is still rocking old software.
But the wait will soon be over. Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, has announced on Twitter that the Nokia 3 will be getting the Android 7.1.1 update by the end of August. What’s more, in a subsequent tweet Sarvikas noted that the update would be rolled out to the entire world at the same time.

This is no doubt good news for Nokia 3 owners, but with Android 8.0 reportedly arriving in the next month or two, it might only satisfy them for a short time.
