John Oliver Lambasts Steve Mnuchin—and His Wife for Good Measure
This week on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” host John Oliver lambasted Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for his request to take a $25,000 per hour military jet on his honeymoon with bride Louise Linton.
First, however, he took a look at the backlash against President Donald Trump’s remarks to a crowd in Alabama on Friday night urging NFL owners to give the order to “get that son-of-a-b*tch off the field” when they see a player protesting police brutality by taking a knee during the national anthem.
While the vast majority of players, team owners, managers and broadcasters sided against Trump, Fox News’ Jeanine “Judge Jeanine” Pirro used her Saturday program to bawl out the protesting players like their drunk, angry stepmother.
“America’s been incredibly good to every one of you,” she snarled. “America’s allowed you to shine and become financially prosperous. There are so many of you who make tens of millions of dollars. Shame on you! Shame on all of you!”
“Wow,” said Oliver. “But, you know what? She is right. No one wants to hear about politics from a wildly successful athlete. You only want to hear about them from an abject failure of a prosecutor who somehow let Robert Durst slip through her fingers.”
He moved on to Mnuchin and Linton, who have not only flagrantly wasted taxpayer dollars, but rudely and condescendingly flaunting it on social media.
Oliver slyly dinged Linton on her boasting about her Valentino Rock Stud heels, which Oliver pegged as being from Fall, 2010.
“Is it only seven years ago from the ankle down?” he asked. “But the strangest part of Linton’s comment was when she said, ‘Do you think the US government paid for our honeymoon or personal travel? LOLOLOL.'”
Which, in fact, Mnuchin did when he flew to Kentucky and tried to do when he requested the military jet for his honeymoon.
“To quote America’s loudest legal mind,” Oliver said, bringing up a shot from Pirro’s monologue. “America has been very good to them. It has allowed them to shine and become financially prosperous and they’ve made millions of dollars. They have disgraced the American taxpayer so SHAME ON YOU! SHAME ON BOTH OF YOU!”
