Donald Trump Is Crudely Mocking Mitch McConnell and John McCain Behind Their Backs
Donald Trump has been a vicious bully for as long as he's been a public figure (and likely well before that). Since assuming office, he has ridiculed Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Arnold Schwarzenegger and Hillary Clinton, to name but a small fraction of his targets. Perhaps it's no surprise, then, that he has taken aim at the Republicans he believes are to blame for the failure of Graham-Cassidy, the GOP's newest effort to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.
According to a new Axios report, the perpetually aggrieved president has taken to mocking Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) "slumped shoulders" and "lethargic body language," and imitating Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) "thumbs-down on his historic health-care vote."
This is not the first time Trump has derided the Arizona senator. During the Republican primary, he infamously told reporters that he "liked people who weren't captured." John McCain spent several years as a POW during the Vietnam War and refused release until his fellow prisoners were set free.
Trump's relationship with McConnell, meanwhile, has been eroding for several months. The Senate majority leader has bristled at the president's call to nuke the filibuster, and Trump has repeatedly expressed his dissastisfaction with the GOP's inability to pass health care legislation. The two recently teamed up to campaign for Luther Strange in the Alabama Republican primary, a doomed effort that left the president humiliated and scrambling to delete his endorsement tweets.
If recent history is any guide, more crude impressions are sure to come.
