Robbers attack Abuja resident by police checkpoint
Olaleye Aluko, Abuja
Two armed robbers have attacked a resident, identified as Isa Ozo, at Masalasi Junction, Zone 4, in the Wuse area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, carting away his money and other valuables.
The victim, Ozo, a Digital Media practitioner, who took to Twitter to share his experience, lamented that he was robbed near a checkpoint, where there were three policemen.
Our correspondent learnt that Ozo was robbed on Monday while returning from his workplace at the Central Area around 8pm.
The victim alleged that after the robbery, he accosted one of the policemen, asking why they did not help him out, but he was asked to “face his road.”
Ozo said, “My phone was snatched at gunpoint right before three policemen by a checkpoint. I closed from work at Central Area and I came out to get a cab. After being there for a while without getting a cab, I decided to move close to the police checkpoint to wait for a cab since many were passing.
“Two guys came close to me. I thought they were waiting for a cab too, but I was wrong. They were about to carry out their criminal activity. One held a gun to my stomach, and the other held a knife to my neck and told me to submit all I had quietly. I dropped my phone. They searched my pocket and took my cash. They immediately ran under the bridge close by. I was less than 20 metres away from three policemen.
“How they didn’t see those boys rob me was still a shock. I decided to approach the policemen after the boys fled. I was shocked by this time. I asked the policemen if they didn’t see what happened to me right in front of them; one of them said, ‘Why you dey ask us? Face your road abeg’. I am not even bothered about the robbers, but those who were meant to protect life and property.”
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Manzah Anjuguri, said Abuja was safe for all residents, adding that the police had deployed uniformed and plain-clothes operatives to ensure security of lives and property.
He noted that the victim should report the incident at the nearest police station for immediate action.
