Okagbare, Egwero show their class at Warri Relays

Blessing Okagbare and Ogho-Oghene Egwero inspired  Nigeria to win the 4x100m Relays  at the 2017 Warri Relays & CAA Grand Prix held  at the Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro on Tuesday.

While Okagbare led the women’s  team to a comfortable win in a time of 43.92 secs, the men’s  team piloted by Egwero were stretched by the Botswanan quartet who came to Ozoro with the aim of getting a qualifying time for the World Championships in London next month.

The Nigerians returned with a time of 40.17 secs while Botswana finished with a time of 40.2 1secs.

There was more to celebrate for Nigeria in the women’s 100 hurdles  as United States-based  Tobiloba Amusan continued her impressive run this season, winning the race in a time of 12.97 secs while Grace Ayemoba finished a distant second in a time of 13.53 secs. Favour  Efe ran   13.63 secs to come third.

The men’s 100m was won by Egwero, who ran  10.33 secs. Botswana’s Keene Motukisi  placed second with a time of  10.41 secs, with Harry Chukwudike taking third  with a time of 10.47 secs.

In the women’s 100m, Isoken Igbinosun finished ahead of national champion, Aniekeme Alphonsus, as she posted a time of 11.49 secs. Alphonsus crossed the line in 11.51 secs and Ntia Obong Mercy in 11.66 secs.

Agber Shimenge claimed top position in the women’s 800m with a time of 2.11.29 secs.

Philomena Ihekandu  came second with a time of 2.12.17  while Oluchi Offoma settled for  the  third place  after running  2.12.20.

In the  men’s 110m  hurdles, Martins Ogieriakhi, who  a few days ago won the national title, followed up with another winning performance as he breasted the tape in a time of 13.82 secs  to win the race ahead of Abejoye Oyeniyi and Bashiru Abuduliahi who picked second and third spots respectively.

Yinka Ajayi  won the  women’s 400m in 51.30 secs  while Abike Egbeniyi (52.03 secs)  and Folashade Olotu (56.83 secs) finished  second and third  respectively.

Meanwhile, Kelechi Nwanaga on Tuesday broke a 15-year national record in women’s javelin after throwing   58.15m  in Ozoro.

The previous record of 55.30 was created by Sorochukwu Ihuefo in 2002.

However, Nwanaga’s  throw  has yet to be  officially ratified by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.
