More artistes react to proposed ban on music videos

More Nigerian artistes, especially musicians, have joined Peter Okoye of the PSquare to react to the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed’s recent declaration of an impending ban on the shooting of music videos and movies abroad.

The latest person to criticise the move is rapper Ruggedman, who is the current head of the media committee of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria. In a statement posted on social media, he warned that banning entertainers from conducting their business abroad was contrary to the principle of democracy.

“You cannot privatise what you don’t own. If you want entertainers to stop going abroad to shoot movies and music videos, then government officials should stop going abroad for medical treatment, stop sending their children to study abroad and going for vacation outside Nigeria,” he said.

Also, describing Nigerian entertainers as the greatest human resource export of the country, comedian I go dye urged government to do everything possible to protect their intellectual property from the activities of copyright thieves.

I go dye said that he expected a mutual partnership between the government and stakeholders.

Meanwhile, a two-day Conference on the Financing of the Creative Industry, organised by the Ministry of Information and Tourism, ended in Lagos on Tuesday.

Organised in conjunction with Think Tank Media, it brought film-makers, musicians and other members of the arts community in discussions with government officials, investors and financiers.

While the Minister of Finance, Dr. Kemi Adeosun, pledged Federal Government intervention, Mohammed announced a $1m venture capital for practitioners,  noting that the conference would be annual.

Meanwhile, the information and culture minister has said that the need to protect the Nigerian labour, economy  and broadcasting ideals led to the contemplated ban on shooting of films abroad.

He said, “The argument is simple, when you go to shoot a film offshore, you use the workforce of that country to develop the capacity of that country and you improve the economy of that country and that is what we are trying to do here.”
