Journalist, wife die after gas explosion

National Vice President of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), South- South zone, Mr. Eddie Bekom, has died. Bekom, an employee of the Cross River Broadcasting Service, Ikom, died on Sunday evening.

According to NewTelegraph, Bekom, wife and four children had been receiving treatment at the Plastic Surgery Department of the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA), Ebonyi State, for more than two weeks after their neighbour’s cooking gas exploded.

Bekom’s 10-year-old boy died in the hospital few days after the explosion, while his wife died a week later, leaving him and three children behind. One of the surviving children is in critical condition. However, Bekom passed away on Sunday.

In a statement signed by the Ebonyi State Chairman of SWAN, Comrade Chukwuemeka Opara, the chapter regretted that after all efforts made to save Bekom’s life, he still died after the death of two of his family members.
