Immigration officer files suit as minister decorates 16 ACGs

Adelani Adepegba, Abuja

The Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.), on Monday decorated 16 officers who were recently promoted to their next ranks.

Five Assistant Comptrollers-General of Immigration were elevated to Deputy Comptrollers-General; five ACGs were promoted to DCGs in the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps; while six ACGs were elevated to DCGs in the Nigeria Prisons Service.

Meanwhile, an aggrieved immigration officer, Daniel Makolo, had dragged the CDFIB and the CG immigration to court over the refusal of the service to promote him for over nine years.

Makolo in an affidavit in support of a Motion on Notice filed at the National Industrial Court, Abuja on July 11, 2017 stated that he joined the NIS in 1987 as a senior officer on grade level 07.

The claimant added that he had been a Chief Superintendent for over nine years while Mohammed Babandede who joined the service in 1985 had become the Comptroller-General of Immigration.

Makolo is seeking an order restraining the NIS, the CDFIB and the CG immigration from “carrying out any promotion exercise pending the hearing and determination of this writ of summons, thus maintaining the status quo ante.”

Our correspondent gathered from sources who alleged that the promotions by the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Board did not follow civil service rules.

The sources alleged that most eligible senior officers were not invited for the promotion interview.

A source said the exercise was skewed in favour of selected officials, noting that 28 ACGs in the immigration service were sidelined by the CDFIB while others were not considered for promotion.

When asked if all eligible senior para-military officers were invited for a promotion interview by the board, the spokesman, Ministry of Interior, Willy Bassey, said he did not know the procedure for the promotion of the officers.
