Group asks Ambode to provide ambulances in riverine areas

The Founder, Community Tours and Sensitisation, Mr. Olufemi Adabale, has called on the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, to provide marine ambulances in riverine communities in the state.

Adabale, whose organisation has conducted field research and training in communities in Onisiwo Local Government Area of Lagos, lamented that many residents had died because they could not find any means of transportation to secondary health care facilities during emergencies.

He said this when the officials of the organisation visited Punch Place in Magboro, Ogun State, on Tuesday.

Aside the provision of  ambulances, they stated, there was  the need for the state government to equip health centres in the riverine areas  with personnel who could provide  first aid to victims of boat mishaps.

“In Takwa Bay Island, for instance, they have only one health centre servicing six communities. They don’t have any permanent doctor on duty; they often run out of drugs and other consumables.

“Health workers need to be posted there and they should be given the right incentives so they can stay because these communities have no power supply or amenities that will encourage them to practise there,” he stated.

According to him, CTS, after conducting needs assessment in the community, had partnered St. John Ambulance International to train volunteers on how to provide first aid services on the Island.

Adabale added that its first aid ambassadors who must have backgrounds in nursing and other relevant qualifications would help to reduce causalities recorded during emergencies.
