Ethnic politics, threat to national development -Salis

A former governorship aspirant in Lagos State under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Owolabi Salis, has said that ethnic politics as currently being played in Nigeria was one of the biggest problems affecting the country’s growth.

The United States of America-based legal practitioner, who described Nigeria’s democracy as lacking in equity, said that until every section of the country was given equal shot at leadership, the wheels of national development will continue to slow down.

According to Salis, whose position follows a recent quit notice order given to Igbos living in the North by a coalition of Arewa youths, the agitation for secession by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra and other ethnic nationalities in Nigeria will reduce drastically once equity and justice take precedent over ethnic domination.

He said, “What we need now as a nation is equity-based democracy which I call equitocracy. It is a model that has the capacity of addressing issues of ethnicity and religion in our politics which has become a threat to our development as a nation.

“This type of democracy, if adopted, will address the myriad of challenges Nigeria is facing as under such system all groups in the country including the minorities will be adequately represented in government.

“The agitation for sovereignty by the Igbos and the quit notice from Arewa youths will subside once equitocracy is adopted as this will ensure that elected politicians at all levels will do things that please everybody in their jurisdiction.”
