Court remands APC chieftain, Diekola, six others in prison
Femi Makinde, Osogbo
An Osogbo Chief Magistrate Court has ordered that a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, Alhaji Fatai Oyedele, popularly known as Diekola, be remanded in the Ilesa Prison for conduct likely to cause breach of public peace.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr. A. A. Ayeni, also ordered that six other persons arraigned alongside with Diekola should also be remanded in the same prison.
The six other accused persons are Salawu Moshood, Oni Kola Adekunle, Oladosu Ako, Funso Babalola, Bayo Funso and Babalola Kayode.
The police arraigned the seven accused persons on charges of conspiracy, unlawful assembly and conduct likely to cause breach of public peace.
The prosecutor, Mr. Chris Okafor, told the court that the accused persons committed the offences on July 10 within the Osogbo Magisterial District.
He told the court that the offences contravened Sections 517, 349 and 69 and were punishable under Section 70 of the Criminal Code Cap 34, Vol. II Laws of Osun State 2002.
All the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the three charges and their counsels, Mr. Olanrewaju Jayeoba and Mr. Bamidele Salam, applied for their bail.
But the magistrate, in his ruling, ordered that all the accused persons should be remanded in the Ilesa Prison and adjourned the case to July 18 for mention.
Scores of Diekola’s supporters followed him and other accused persons to the court to demonstrate their solidarity.
Diekola had honoured police invitation on Monday was arrested and taken to court but the magistrate declined to hear the case.
Diekola had some months ago vowed that he would send Governor Rauf Aregbesola back to Lagos in 2018 after his tenure must have ended and would make sure that the governor was not allowed to install his successor.
