7 Transfers That Left The World Of Football Feeling Weird [Photos]
Before the end of each season, clubs look at players that can be sold and bought to improve the team next season. However there are some which seemed to take fans aback because they were never expected to happen.
With Fabio Borini joining AC Milan from Sunderland, Andre Gomes and Paco Alcacer joining Barcelona last season, football has shown that truly anything can happen.
Here are five weird transfers that have happened in the last ten years;
1. Robinho (Real Madrid to Manchester City) This one happened in 2008. Robinho was the signing that Manchester City used to prove to the world they meant business after the Abu Dhabi take over of 2008.
2. Robin van Persie (Arsenal to Manchester United) Wenger is never one to sell to his rivals, so when Van Persie left his beloved Arsenal for Manchester United, everyone was surprised. Van Persie inspired Manchester United to the Premier League in his first season with the Red Devils.
3. Oscar (Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG) At 25 years of age, a player of Oscar’s ability should never be joining the Chinese League but that’s exactly what the Brazilian did in January 2017.
Juventus, AC Milan and PSG were reportedly interested in his services. He is currently the fourth highest paid player in the world.
4. Michael Owen (Newcastle United to Manchester United) What makes this transfer weird is the fact that Owen is a Liverpool legend and a boyhood fan of the club. To join Manchester United after stints at Real Madrid and Newcastle was a canal sin.
5. Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona to Chelsea) He once said he would never play for another English club asides Arsenal but he turns out for Chelsea where he is a fan favorite.
6. Julien Faubert (West Ham United to Real Madrid) Julien Faubert’s 2009 loan move to Real Madrid even left Los Blancos legend Alfredo Di Stefano confused.
7. Tevez & Mascherano (Media Sports Investments/Corinthians to West Ham) Two quality players who impressed during the 2006 World Cup joining West Ham among the vast amount of interest from some of Europe’s top clubs is really confusing.
