Osun govt to enforce environmental laws ―Commissioner

MR Idowu Korede, Osun Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, says the state government will enforce its environmental laws to instil the culture of sanitation in the citizens of the state.

The commissioner said this in Osogbo on Friday during an advocacy visit to the Correspondents Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state.

According to him, it is imperative to fully enforce all the state environmental laws in order to change the attitude of the residents toward the sanitation of their surroundings.

Korede said that the ministry would intensify public sensitisation programmes to raise the awareness of the residents on the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of refuse, while those who flouted sanitation laws be arrested and prosecuted.

“If we dredge and free waterways and our people still continue to dump refuse in the waterways, the government efforts will be totally futile.

“Activities of the government must be complemented by the activities of the people; they also need to know that there is punishment for violating environmental laws,’’ he said

Korede said most of the diseases in the area were environmentally- related, adding, therefore, that the cleanliness of the environment would keep a lot of diseases away from the people.

The commissioner solicited media support in efforts to sensitise the people to the dangers of a filthy environment, saying that people should be mobilised to refrain from dumping their garbage indiscriminately.

He said that the people must make sanitation their way of life and traditions, adding that citizens did not have to wait for government to tell them to clean up their surroundings.
